2600 unions of the country will get high-speed internet

The government'sInfo Sarkar-3' project is nearing completion to provide high-speed internet service to the unions of the country. About two and a half thousand unions now have a broadband internet connection. Once 2,600 unions are connected, it will be officially inaugurated between May and June.

Apart from the Meherpur district, the government is working to establish broadband internet connection in the digital centers of 2,600 unions in 63 districts. Of these, the equipment has been installed in 2,550 unions. Connections have been given to 2,450 unions.

The goal and objective of the project are to expand the network through 19,500 km of optical fiber cable in 2,600 unions. At the union level, network connections will be established in various departments, schools, colleges, growth centers, and other government offices.

The project titled National Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Development (Info-Government 3rd Phase) is being implemented by Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the Department of Information and Communication Technology. Its budget is about 2 thousand crore rupees.

China has a debt of Rs 1,227 crore, which has been spent on equipment. The duration of the project was from January 2017 to June 2019. The term was later extended to June 2020. However, due to the extension of the duration of all the projects of the government due to Corona, the duration of this project was also extended to June 2021. Project authorities say the cost of the project has not increased despite the extension.

State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Junaid Ahmed told Prothom Alo that work on the 'Info Sarkar 3' project is nearing completion. He hopes to be inaugurated by May-June this year.

"High-speed internet at the village level will make a big difference in freelancing and online education," he said. Requirements may not be understood immediately after connection. But after five years it will be understood. A broadband connection will be provided to 1 lakh 9 thousand organizations by 2025. 'He also said that the IT department would make the local internet service providers interested in these issues at the union level.

Summit Communications and Fiber at Home, a nationwide telecommunication transmission network (NTTN) company, are providing free bandwidth in the Info Sarkar-3 project. Over the next 20 years, it will be maintained and maintained by public-private initiatives. Once the connection is established, tenders will be called for its maintenance work

According to the project authorities, the Info-Sarkar 3rd phase project is being implemented in continuation of the implementation of BCC Info-Sarkar 1st phase and Info-Sarkar 2nd phase projects. In the first phase, the connection was established in the district and in the second phase in the Upazila. In addition to 2,600 unions, VPN (Virtual Private Network) connections are being provided to one thousand offices of different levels of Bangladesh Police.

It is learned that after searching in some unions of Chapainawabganj, connections have been established there. Abdul Hai, chairman of the Rangarchar union in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, said the equipment had been installed in his union, but no connection had been made. Apart from this, the unions of Feni have also been connected to broadband internet in the Info Sarkar-3 project.

The goal and objective of the project are to expand the network through 19,500 km of optical fiber cable in 2,600 unions. At the union level, network connections will be established in various departments, schools, colleges, growth centers, and other government offices. One of its objectives is to include the rural population in the government's e-services. To connect the Bangladesh Police Network with the National ICT Network, the GoB aims to ensure the use of free information and communication technology at all levels of the police unit and to help create employment at the marginal level.

Info Sarkar-3 project director Bikarna Kumar Ghosh told Prothom Alo that the work is nearing completion. It's a little late because of Corona. It is likely to be inaugurated in May-June. He further said that through the implementation of this project, the educational institutions at the union level will be further developed and teaching will be easier. Outsourcing will be more convenient sitting in the village. It will bring benefits to the women of the village for online business.

Emdadul Haque, general secretary of Internet Service Providers Association Bangladesh (ISPAB), said the government's initiative was good.

All unions are coming under broadband. But here the government does not have to leave by transmission. The government will have to decide what the price will be here. Because it has been made with government money. If the benefits of this transmission reach the people, there can be no middleman. '

Emdadul Haque claimed that the internet service providers would have to run at a loss at the union level for the first two years, adding that the government would have to set a price here. Prices need to be reduced. If the transmission cost in Dhaka is 20 rupees, you have to pay 10 rupees in the union. Because it has been done at government expense. He hopes for government guidance in this regard.

Regarding the price, State Minister Junaid Ahmed said the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) fixes the price of the internet. At the union level, BTRC has been asked to look into the matter to ensure affordable internet access to the customer.
