From tonight, if you send a text message in Bengali on your mobile phone, the charge is half
Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar has said that the charge of sending text messages (SMS) in Bengali on mobile phones will be halved from the first noon of Ekushey. According to him, if you send an SMS in Bangla from any operator, the charge will be 25 paisa.
The telecom minister made the remarks at a webinar organized by Technology Media Guild Bangladesh-TMGB, an organization of technology journalists. Sumon Ahmed Sabir, the first Bangladeshi technologist elected to the executive committee of Epic, presented the keynote address at the event titled 'Bengali in Technology: Wanted, Found and Aspired'. Besides, Sonia Bashir Kabir, Vice-Chairperson of UN Technology Bank, BASIS, BCS, ISPAB, and the President, General Secretary of Vakya, the top four organizations in the country's technology sector, addressed the webinar.
In the webinar, Mustafa Jabbar said that the government's IT department is developing 18 tools to increase the use of Bengali on the internet and make Bengali a dominant language. Once this project is completed, it will be easier to recognize Bengali as the official language of the United Nations. He also said that the Bengali caste has been discriminated against in sending text messages on mobile phones for so long that it is coming to an end tonight.
